Easier to be Green

March, 2009

The University of Arkansas has a new Web site devoted to its sustainability initiatives. The site, http://sustainability.uark.edu, emphasizes the importance of sustainable practices to the University of Arkansas.

"Being a sustainable university means that as we educate new generations of leaders, conduct the research that makes our lives better, and reach out to the communities of Arkansas and beyond, we do not compromise future generations," said Chancellor John A. White.

The Web site promotes awareness of sustainable activities on campus, including student groups and activities, events and milestones on campus. It also showcases faculty research that helps promote sustainable practices on campus, in Arkansas and the world, including green architecture projects and research in the fields of engineering, geology and agriculture.

The site also includes past events that highlight the university as a leader in sustainability. For instance, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), a program administered by the U.S. Green Building Council, recognized the Innovation Center as Arkansas' first LEED-certified building. And in February of this year, the university became the first higher education institution in the state, and among the first 100 in the nation, to sign the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. The commitment is a pledge by the presidents to reduce and ultimately neutralize greenhouse gas emissions on their campuses.
